Showing not only musical talent, but determination and social awareness, Carrie Daniel brought "A Christmas Song To End Mysoyny" to Funny or Die.
Not only did this project resonate with so many people, it was a project that helped Daniel show how quickly she was able to turn an idea into a finished product.
"It was late in December when I got the idea. As you can imagine it takes a little bit of time to go into a studio and records a song, get a team together to film something," Daniel said. "So I guess the biggest obstacle was that the idea came to me in the 11th hours and I had to turn it around very quickly. I did the whole thing in 3 or 4 days."The project gained notability late in 2017 and into 2018, which was a success for Daniel, who did almost no promotion for the project when it was posted on funny or die.
Daniel's talents got put to the test throughout the project as she took on a project she had not attempted before.
"This is the first parody song that I have written," Daniel said. "I was basically waiting for an audition and I thought well how can I be productive in this time, and i was listening to some of my music and flipping through my songbook. And Santa baby is a song that I sang for an audition for for a Christmas production. I started thinking through the lyrics and I thought it would be fun to play with these which are a bit like a list of what an actress would want for Christmas."The state of the entertainment industry, which Daniel finds herself in, caught her attention since she could relate to some of the situations coming to light.
Daniel knew "Santa Baby" and thought since it was a classic song it would be a perfect song to parody.
"The lyrics started coming to me as I was building on it. I was sort of speaking the truth The truth of this moment I am in the entertainment industry and some of the personal struggles that I found through trying to keep it light and funny. Because I love comedy and humor," Daniel said.Although, many Christmas songs were parodied, there were also some original Christmas inspired songs released, many were just silly and out there for entertainment value.
Daniel created a song which could speak to the climate of the entertainment industry and which also had some personal aspect to it.
The lyrics were written to support the brave women who spoke out.
Daniel said, "There’s a lot of stuff out there right now that is tough to read. I wanted to make something funny and a little tongue-in-cheek."
