The audience was in tears through out CASA 0101’s production of TUESDAYS WITH MORRIE not only from the brilliant writing, but such wonderful acting.
Based on the breakout The New York Times bestseller, this autobiographical story is about an accomplished journalist driven solely by his career, and his former college professor. Sixteen years later, Mitch learns that his old professor is battling Lou Gehrig’s Disease. Mitch is reunited with Morrie, and what starts as a simple visit turns into a weekly pilgrimage and a class on the meaning of life.
Director Miguel Angel Delgado paced the play in such a manner that just as one emotional interaction was coming down, the next one started, and then hit even deeper.
Vance Valencia who plays Morrie Schwartz gave a performance which left no dry eye in the theatre. Heartfelt and honest, the portrayal of Morrie was phenomenal.
Gilbert Reynoso who plays Mitch Albom does so in a relatable universal manner which connects with audiences through vulnerability.
The positives of this play, first and most importantly the story is a large complex story but universal. Great writing and fantastic pacing which unravels the emotional story calmly.
The acting is phenomenal with such complexity that there are layers to get through in each scene. Captivating, compassionate, and authentic.
The intimate stage and limited set changes allow for the audience to be fully engulfed into the story.
The only negative is that the story begins in a much quicker pace which doesn’t leave much time to care about the characters early.
The start of the play making everything seems flawless is jarring as to explain the 16 years of no contact between Mitch and Morrie.
The distance created within the main characters is easily overseen because the story begins to gain traction, the sentimental aspect grips the attention of the audience, and what’s to come is much more important than what has happened.
Casa 0101’s TUESDAYS WITH MORRIE is a must watch.
