A couple thought they found their dream home, but when they don’t follow the rules it becomes a nightmare in GET OFF MY LAWN, now streaming for free on Tubi.

GET OFF MY LAWN is a concise well told story that is worth the watch.

A sweet suburban couple is terrorized by a deranged teenager and his friends after they purchase his grandfather's sacred home.

Positives:
  • The antagonist is brilliant. Alec, played by Jonah Hwang, gives the audience an uneasy feeling from the start. The overly perfect facade makes for a magnificent contrast to the escalating pranks. Alec, coupled with his strange parents, create more to the background of this character without having to spend needless time to show why Alec has become a ticking time bomb.
  • Jason, played by Tahj Mowry, and Jackie, played by Camila Banus, are not the perfect couple, but their ambition for a family home and imperfect, but loving relationship have the audience caring for their safety. This couple seems to react logically enough to entice the audience to root for their success.
  • The pacing of the story steadily increases drawing in the audience as pranks grow in intensity. There are no overly funny moments that relieve the tension, rather the pranks start soft and harmless and steadily grow more intense and dangerous. The intensity is not just in the pranks, but the mental state of Alec is also intensified, which gives reason to the growing menace without relying on over used tropes.
  • Much of the movie takes place in the daytime. The movie does not rely on overly dark jump scares to thrill audiences. It keeps things lighter and more fun as to not fall into the slasher/gore category many indie thrillers lean towards.
  • Having this release on Tubi may be a big positive for this film as it is distributed alongside many projects like it. It is also a fun and entertaining watch that can be enjoyed on a lazy day. It is not over the top, it is not gore galore, it is just enough to keep audiences entertained throughout.
  • The aesthetic of the film is also big surprise. The antagonist does not fall into the grungy slobbish trope and the protagonists do not fall into the clean neat perfect trope either.
  • The cinematography is also wonderful pulling out to allow audiences to see the surroundings rather than using too many close ups to create a sense of panic.
Negatives:
  • The story could have been pushed a bit darker. While the story is fun with a few light moments thrown in to move story elements, some of the more intense situation would have benefited from more blood or even more torture elements. The impending doom needed to be turned up from what seemed like a 7 or 8 to an 11 for some scenes to really capture the audience’s attention towards the climax.
Over all, this thriller is an 7 out of 10. This indie thriller builds up the unexpected terror to a satisfying climax and payoff without pushing things too harshly. The movie does just enough to entertain, but plays it too safe. The pacing is methodical, going slightly slow but doing so strategically to bring out more character building for important characters.
