The Obscure Distillery and Cocktail experience is back with new spirits and cocktails in its highly anticipated season 3.

The Obscure atmosphere continues the same with subtle changes to continue with the dark ambience.

The night started with a shot of Rites of Kings Whisky paires with the Le Fey’s Return mixed drink — a black pepper and honey Old Fashioned made with Scotch and Rites of Fall Rye.

The Rites of Kings Whisky has a fascinating story with lore based on mythology and diligent work that head distiller and host Théron Regnier as well as beverage director Hope Ewing talk about between the spirit tasting and the mix drink.

The spirit on its own is a 8 out of 10 for a smooth flavorful drink on its own with the mix drink being blended enhancing the flavor in The Obscure’s old fashioned.

The second spirit, Aeternum Vodka paires with what is called the Golden Trilemma mix drink — a make your own Martini shot.

While Regnier made fun of distilling vodka after his expressed disdain for vodka he has made throughout season 1 and season 2.

Aeternum Vodka has a slight smokey taste that gives this vodka the distinct taste, the vodka I’d rate slightly higher than most vodkas at 7 out of 10, but pairing it with a make your own martini shot is not as great as it sounds. The instructions on what to do is explained by the servers at each table, but unless each person has some knowledge of mixing drinks, this can go wrong so each person may have a different experience with the mix drink pairing. For the Golden Trilemma mix drink my experience was not much better than tasting the spirit it will stay just as the spirit score at 7 out of 10.

Moving on to the final spirit of the evening, the Stranger Tides Rum (at 54.5% ABV) paired with Vernon’s Revenge mix drink — a Rum Espresso Tonic.

The story behind this drink is fascinating and has as much lore as Rites of Kings Whisky and includes different franchises, different cultures, and a wonderful mixture of tastes.

Th Stranger Tides Rum while strong has a strong flavor which makes it delicious to sip on and having a strong end to the experience at a 9 out of 10.

Thé Vernon’s Revenge has such a coffee flavoring that masks much of the rum flavor. The spirit adds a sweetness to the mixture as the tonic adds a fizz, which almost gives this a coffee soda with citrus and making this a perfect drink à 10 out of 10.

While the run is the final spirit, there is a final palette cleanser which comes in one of three flavors, a sweet, savory, or sour drink which is enjoyed at the lava room.
