Jesus Figueroa, @Thisfunktional of ThisFunktional.com, talks with filmmaker Bertie Gregory about SHARKS UP CLOSE WITH BERTIE GREGORY, the opening feature of SHARKFEST 2025. Bertie Gregory serves as the host, cinematographer, and on-screen explorer for this feature-length special that opens SharkFest 2025. In this project, he leads a cage free expedition off the coast of Plettenberg Bay, South Africa, to film great white sharks behaving naturally. He deliberately avoids the use of bait or protective cages to maintain ecological authenticity. One of the most striking sequences in the film takes place in a submerged reef cave known as the “cathedral,” where Gregory dives among dozens of ragged tooth sharks. The sequence captures what appears to be ancient mating behavior in a visually haunting, enclosed space rarely accessed by humans. SHARKS UP CLOSE WITH BERTIE GREGORY Available Now on Hulu
