Jesus Figueroa, @Thisfunktional of ThisFunktional.com, talks with director Michael Premo about documentary HOMEGROWN.
Spanning seven years of reporting and more than 350 hours of field footage, Homegrown offers a visceral, ground-level chronicle of three conservative activists whose political transformation escalates from campaigning to confrontation—culminating in the January 6 riots at the U.S. Capitol and the movement’s evolution more than a year after.
The film’s unprecedented access was made possible through years of relationship-building with activists across the right-wing ecosystem—from Proud Boys and militia-aligned organizers to mainstream conservatives.
Through a cinéma vérité approach and a commitment to non-judgmental observation, Homegrown captures private conversations, domestic moments, and high-risk protest environments rarely seen on camera.
The result is a historically significant record of America’s rising political militancy, filmed from the “passenger seat” as events unfolded in real time.
Homegrown is the only nonfiction project known to have filmed a participant before, during, and after the January 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol.
