High stake story with emotional connections makes WARDIVER, available on digital March 27, different in some very exciting ways.
In the film, Cole (Dane DeHaan) prowls the city "Wardriving" – hacking from his car and pulling off high tech robberies while always on the move. He convinces himself no one gets hurt, until black-market tech predator Oscar (Mamoudou Athie) forces him into a million-dollar cyber-heist. The job targets Sarah (Sasha Calle), a woman whose stolen fortune has made her a pawn in a deadly game. As the fallout turns violent and a mob connected lawyer (Jeffrey Donovan) closes in, Cole finds himself drawn to her. Determined to return the money, protect Sarah, and survive a deadly game of cat-and-mouse where every line of code could be his last.
Pros:
- DeHaan is phenomenal at playing both being rule-driven strategic and emotionally endearing. Wonderfully this balance helps audiences become captivated by the lead and creates an endearing connection with Sarah played by Sasha Calle.
- As a femme fatale type Calle is mysterious and powerful. Calle controls the scene throughout Sarah's time on screen. The role is portrayed in such a manner that feels both innocent and dangerous, the way a femme fatale becomes the most enthralling aspect of her character.
- Bringing the heist genre to a tech savvy age made this movie different. The modernized cyber heist gives a new avenue to play with making the heist just as fascinating as the actors which are involved.
Cons:
- The story moves forward fast and can lose the audience while trying to figure out exactly what is happening and how they are working through the plan. With the modern cyber heist, audiences need to understand aspects that are concepts which are not necessarily easy to grasp.
Overall, the story is thrilling and modern with some surprises along the way. Bringing the heist movie to a new era where technology takes center stage, but the actors involved still continue to drive the story in unique ways. Moving a genre forward is difficult, but WARDRIVER is presenting a thrilling heist movie is a captivating modern way.
