Review: DOMINIQUE struggles through rough patches to be a good story

Action films tend to be lead by rough male leads, DOMINIQUE is lead by a strong female lead which captivates in a stoic role.

Dominique is a brilliant assassin left for dead in a small South American village. After the only man she cares about is savagely killed, Dominique sacrifices herself to protect his innocent family and trains them to wage a war against the bloodthirsty authorities and brutal drug cartels responsible for his death.

Oksana Orlan and Maurice Compte star in this electrifying crime thriller about the power of courage and the price of vengeance.

The main points I liked about the film:
  • Orlan is brilliant as Dominique. With minimal lines and starting off as a standoffish anti-hero, it comes to have a saving grace as the supporting cast begins to build up a good story.
  • The action is over the top and it does not get dragged out just to fill time. With concise moves, Dominique seems like a force to be reckoned with. While Dominique seems has some incredible action moves, the planning and mentality that is showcased helps this seem deliberate and makes Dominique even more lethal.
  • The story has so many elements come out, while it could be a simple three point storyline, there is a complexity with more depth coming into the story.

What was lacking:
  • The ending, although it was awesome, leaves a feeling if not being done. A cliffhanger is a good story tool that makes for a yearning for a sequel, but each movie in a franchise should feel like a complete story. This movie leaves some loose ends.
  • The pace is difficult to enjoy. Action films have a quick pace to them, but DOMINIQUE feels like the beginning drags without giving the audience a reason to care about Dominique.
While this story has some unique, entertaining elements, it feels like a slow build that only speeds up at the end and then ends abruptly.

A sequel would be nice to have, just so the loose ends are brought to a close.

Overall I would rate this film a 7 out of 10 stars. Lead actress Orlan holds her own when compared to any action star — tough, mysterious, and dominating. The story does end up having the audience really rooted in Dominique.
