Jesus Figueroa, @Thisfunktional of ThisFunktional.com, talks with Producer, Entomologist, Biologist, and National Geographic Explorer Sammy Ramsey Ph.D about being part of National Geographic’s SECRETS OF THE BEES, streaming now on Hulu and Disney+. SECRETS OF THE BEES is a groundbreaking two-part special that uses custom-built macro motion-control rigs and specialized lenses to transport viewers directly into the hive. While the honeybee is the backbone of the series, it explores the diverse world of over 20,000 bee species—from "Vulture Bees" that feed on meat to "Broomstick Bees" that build stick fortresses. The series showcases groundbreaking research revealing that bees possess "second-order thinking," individual personalities, and the cognitive sophistication to solve complex multi-step puzzles. It highlights how bee losses threaten one-third of the global food supply and the essential ecosystems they underpin. Samuel Ramsey Ph.D received his bachelor’s in entomology from Cornell University and his Ph.D. in entomology from the University of Maryland, College Park. He completed his post-doctoral training with Dr. Jay Evans, Steve Cook and Daniel Sonenshine at the USDA Agricultural Research Service’s Bee Research Laboratory and now serves as an endowed professor of entomology at the University of Colorado, Boulder, BioFrontiers Institute and the Ecology and Evolutionary Biology department. Ramsey has been featured on Hulu’s docuseries “Your Attention Please,” as well as in the Washington Post, The New York Times, NPR, CNN, Wired, CBS’ “This Morning,” Khan Academy, Seeker, NBC’s “The Today Show” and several local news segments. Ramsey is celebrated as an engaging science communicator, and he uses this talent to make science more accessible to a broad audience. His nonprofit, The Ramsey Research Foundation, works to develop novel pathways for scientific funding by removing the paywalls that keep the public from engaging with published scientific work ——————————————————— Anchor podcasts: anchor.fm/ThisFunktional anchor.fm/while-we-were-gaming anchor.fm/LatinX-Talks Gaming channels: twitch.com/ThisFunktional facebook.com/gaming/thisfunktionalgaming Tipping Page: streamelements.com/thisfunktional/tip PayPal.me/ThisFunktionalBlog Like, Follow, Subscribe to ThisFunktional: Thisfunktional.com @thisfunktional instagram.com/thisfunktional facebook.com/thisfunktional YouTube.com/thisfunktional thisfunktional.tumblr.com
